The Bears Hit the Road to Salt Lake City this Friday

BERKELEY – Cal rugby team travels to Salt Lake City for its last road contest of the regular season on Friday when they take on Utah at McCarthy Track and Field at 5:30 pm PT.
“We are planning to rotate the lineup pretty significantly,” head coach Jack Clark said. “It’s time to take some minutes off some players where we can and give some playing time opportunity to others. It’s exciting to see how players react and perform with new opportunities. For sure Utah will be ready for us. We will need to be road focused and committed to one another.”
The Bears are 10-0 this season, following their win at home last week against Central Washington. They defeated the Wildcats 48-19 thanks to a dominating performance in the first half. Cal crossed the try-line five times in the first half, including a pair by Senior Nick Bloom. The Bears kept Central Washington out of the try zone for the first 35 minutes of the match and maintained the lead for all 80 minutes of the contest. Another two tries from junior Max Schumacher and a try apiece from senior Jason Severance, sophomore Will Shankland, senior Jake Broekhuizen, and senior Jack Manzo clinched the victory for the Bears.
Sophomore Will Shankland has bolstered the starting lineup this season, appearing six times in the starting XV and contributing five tries overall. Fellow sophomore Tom Dixon will be joining the starting lineup this Friday, his fourth appearance in the starting XVs and ninth match overall. Dixon has collected a pair of tries this season versus Cal Poly and San Diego Legion Academy.
Utah holds a 1-2 record this season, with only three matches on the books due to health and safety protocols canceling their matchup with San Diego State early in the season. The Utes are coming off a tough loss to BYU on March 5. They were defeated on their home field 57-5 by the Cougars. Utah was also defeated by UCLA 57-3 on February 26 but managed a 41-21 victory over Oregon on February 12.
The Bears and the Utes last went head-to-head back in the fall during the Pac-12 7s tournament hosted at Witter Rugby Field. The Bears 7s squad defeated Utah 36-5. The last time the XVs teams were scheduled to meet was back in March 2020, but the contest was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to that, the Cal XVs last met Utah in Strawberry Canyon for the 2019 Homecoming match where they defeated the Utes.
